Save The San Juan Hotel

PROTECT OUR HISTORY

MUSEO 956

Museo 956 is founded and operated by the Save the San Juan Hotel Collective. As part of our efforts to save the hotel it became apparent that not only were most people unfamiliar with the history of the hotel, but that there was a lack of consciousness in regards to the role it played in the white settler colonization of the Río Grande Valley at the turn of the 20th Century. While elders are the knowledge keepers of this history there was little public access to the history. In April of 2025, SSJH Collective held an event to share these histories and to our surprise 300+ people showed up. Soon, we realized that the public was very interested in this history but that one event was not enough. Therefore, we opened Museo 956 to develop a restorative public history model that would provide greater access to healing narratives.
